Symbolism in "To Kill a Mockingbird"
¨Black¨ Snowman
|
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the snowman represents the black and white people. Black people stand under the white. When the mud is placed first, it shows how they are less important than the white people. When the snow is placed on top it shows white supremacy and how the white people in Maycomb are the leaders. The black people in Maycomb are irrelevant to the rest. It also shows Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch. Atticus is shown as the snow and Tom as the dirt/mud. The snow is placed on top of the dirt/mud which shows that Atticus is taking care of Tom. Attius is Toms lawyer and is trying protecting him so the snowman represents Atticus protecting Tom.

Mad Dog
The mad dog represents racism, or black people. The racism or the black people are coming to the town. The ¨illness¨ causes them to close their doors and keep them away. In the book, closed doors and illness symbolizes the people of Maycomb keeping their door closed from something bad. The illness is racism and outside the closed door is anything to do with black people. The white people of Maycomb don´t like the black people so they keep their doors closed to keep them away. Mayella's Geraniums
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Mayella is holding a geranium. This stands for the trial or Tom Robinson's death figuratively being in the hands. It is up to her to decide if Tom goes to prison. She decides this because, back then it was almost impossible for a black person to win against a white person in court. It is in her hands because she can decide if she wants to tell the truth or lie. The color of the flower is red and red stands for blood or death. This shows that the death of Tom Robinson is in her hands and she decides what will happen to him.
